European Festival Awards: vote for Sound!

You can leave your vote here!

Every year festival-goers have the prestigious role to vote for their favorite festivals. MasterCard Balaton Sound is once again nominated to become the ‘Best Medium-Sized Festival’ of Europe by the European Festival Awards. It’s time to vote!

Balaton Sound is once again nominated in the category of ‘Best Medium-Sized Festival’ at the European Festival Awards, the category it actually won two years ago! More than 300 European festivals, from the smallest to the largest, representing 33 countries will be vying for gongs for Best Major, Medium-sized, Small, New, Indoor Festival up for grabs, plus the highly coveted Line-Up Of The Year.

What is the European Festival Awards?

Presented in association with Yourope and Eurosonic Noorderslag the European Festival Awards are the only pan-European body solely dedicated to recognising the contributions and achievements of the event organisers and performing artists that generate billions of Euros for local economies and brighten up the summer for tens of millions of festival-goers each year.

The Voting Process: Once again, the winners will be decided by a combination of public votes and the EFA jury – made up of journalists, booking agents, festival organisers – who will have a 25 per cent say in the final outcome of the public voted categories.

2014: Sounds good

The 2014 MasterCard Balaton Sound attracted a total of 145 000 fans during 4 days and 5 nights. Almost 50% of the guests came from abroad and the festival passes were sold out months before the start of the event. The live stream of the festival reached hundreds of thousands of viewers, thanks to the cooperation with Ustream and Telekom.

MasterCard Balaton Sound set a new attendance record with a total of 145 000 guests this year. The main reason was the big growth in the number of foreign visitors, meaning that this year almost every second fan came from outside Hungary. The weather presented big challenges to the organizing crew with huge thunderstorms on the first and last days, but the crowd was never really bothered and had a great time at the seaside party.

“The organizing crew was facing a big challenge thanks to the rainy start and end of the event. Some of the roads at the festival were ruined by the water and we had to put in a lot of effort to repair them in time.” – said main organizer Zoltan Fulop. “We were ordering extra infrastructure from abroad overnight to put plastic covering on all the important roads. We also believe that the fact that all programs were held even during the biggest rain is a huge success and shows the strength of our organizing squad. And what’s most important, both the fans and the artists seemed to have a great time at Balaton Sound” – he added.

The festival presented a huge number of stars on 4 big and many other smaller stages. David Guetta has been present for many years at the event and also gave a full house set on Friday night. Martin Garrix, Disclosure, Rudimental, Wiz Khalifa, Alesso, or Richie Hawtin also gave memorable shows, while Armin van Buuren’s gig ended right at the moment when the football world cup final’s extra time was beginning, so the crowd could follow the exciting game live on the led walls of the Main Stage.

For this year the festival map has changed in many ways. The campsites were moved to an outer venue, so the party crowd could occupy the full area of the Zamardi free beach and also enjoy some award-winning design elements, including the giant flowers next to the MasterCard Main Stage, the Balaton Sound script on the lake and also other buildings and visuals.

MasterCard Balaton Sound is not just a Hungarian festival any more, but also an important part of the European summer festival agenda. “When we started the Sound in 2007, we never really thought that it would become such a success” – said Norbert Lobenwein, the other main organizer of the event. “We had a few tens of thousands of fans in the first year and this grew up to a total figure of 145 000 this year. Almost half of our guests were foreigners and some of the days were sold out weeks before the festival” – he added.

This year’s event was live streamed in cooperation with Telekom and Ustream, helping the event reaching out to more than 300 000 viewers outside the festival area. The organizers would like to thank all fans (at the festival or watching the event online) for their interest in the event!

Armin and the last day

Balaton Sound 2014 started and ended with a thunderstorm, while in between we had all that makes us love this event: beautiful girls, bikini, beach and huge parties with some of the best acts and DJs of the world. You're clearly the best fans out there and we thank you for being here! Now check the message of Armin Van Buuren!

This is how it all starts…

Let’s throw ourselves into crazy partying right on the first day of Balaton Sound. On the Main Stage we can see the Nervo, Martin Garrix, and Alesso, but among others today Rudimental, DVBBS, Blasterjaxx, Ricardo Villalobos, Dillon Francis and Baauer are playing too.

Today’s warm up on the Main Stage is with the Agebeat, right after it, the Nervo is getting the stage. These two beautiful and talented Australian DJanes have conquered the globe with their daring and energetic electronic music that makes any crowd move for sure. The list of their fans includes not just the crowds at the world’s biggest electronic festivals, but also the high-society of electronic artists. At 19:30 Martin Garrix starts, who is maybe not a superhero or a secret agent, but he does possess two identities. A 17-year-old student by day, but when the sun goes down he can be found behind the decks in front of packed hotspots and festivals across the globe, fraternizing with electronic dance music royalty, tirelessly producing in the studio, and dropping records. After him, with the same popularity Alesso will entertain us. Italian music background and Swedish pop hits have influenced the songs of Alesso, a Stockholm-born Italian DJ. Accordingly, he doesn’t have close ties with the Italian, but the Swedish House Mafia and with his easy-going, monumental dance music he had several sold-out parties.

On the first day, in the Party Arena besides the great Hungarian DJs, three international acts will rock the party. At 00:30 Arty, a Russian DJ gives the real trance experience. Then the Dutch Thom Jongkind  and Idir Makhlaf, better known as DJ duo Blasterjaxx, are passionate for music. They play modern electronica with the most effective elements of electro, big room and progressive house from 02:00 to 03:30. At 03:30 you can see DVBBS (pronounced “dubs”), a Canadian electronic music duo composed of brothers Chris Andre and Alex Andre. They are most famous for their joint international hit with Borgeous titled "Tsunami", they are unbelievably loud, and real strong!

It gives happiness to Sounders that after two years of pause Ricardo Villalobos from Chile returns to Zamárdi. Ricardo’s inexhaustible creativity and innovation and his unfailing feel for the crowd make him an outstanding artist in the contemporary world of electronic music. He gives a 3 hour long show to the crowd, from 04:00 the toughest ones can move with Butch, as he’s playing from then on. Constantly working in parallels – drenched by a potent mixture of juxtaposition and fluidity in both his sets and his productions – Bülent Gürler AKA Butch, fuses the grey-area space between music of the body and mind. With over 20 years consumed by a thirst for electronic music, the Alzey-born, Mainz raised entity has released on leading imprints such as Desolat, Cocoon, Rekids, Sei Es Drum and beyond. On Telekom Terrace there’s only one more international act for the day, and that’s no one, but they play beforehand, at 18:30. Wareika is the project of Jakob Seidenstickler, Henrik Raabe and Florian Schirmacher, that is serving all fans of sophisticated electronic music. Their endless variation of sounds and melodies comes to life in a kaleidoscopic way during their improvisational sets, without any regards towards genre borders. They mix anything from deep techno, over jazz house to dub and Balkan music. Live shows are their real terrain, so make sure you don’t miss their show.

On Thursday the line-up of Jager Arena, is amazing, you won’t be bored there, for sure. There plays the Rudimental Great Britain’s new drum’n’bass favorites. Rudimental are a British band who are signed to Asylum Records and independent label Black Butter. The quartet consists of Piers Agget, Amir Amor, Kesi Dryden and DJ Locksmith. They are very fresh and original, just released their debut album. At 00:30 Dillon Francis comes, with his gig. His music is somewhere between reggaeton and electro house, or you could call it ultra fresh moombathon as well, it’s overwhelming, and amazingly effective. The last international performer here is Baauer, who presents us the trap genre, with its heavy basses. In the afternoon you can meet here the Clean Bandit and the Gorgon City as well. Clean Bandit is made up by four young and talented musicians. Their folksy-neoromantic music is a unique fusion of deep house and classical strings and horns with a very special magic to it. Don’t miss them at this year’s Balaton Sound. Gorgon City is strong and impulsive with great vocals.

With the guidance of the international stars and the popular Hungarian performers a huge party is getting started in Zamárdi, already on Day 0! The real early birds are awaited by the Dutch Sander Van Doorn and the Russian Hard Rock Sofa in the Jäger Arena. And through the night the bests of Hungarian DJs are entertaining the crowd as well.

The first international act today, and on the festival too is the Dutch Sander Van Doorn, who starts his set exactly at midnight. He has cranked out more dance floor destroyers, sold-out gigs, number one records, and awards than most artists do in a lifetime. His shows are always professionals, with an elementary energy, it’s not a surprise that Hungarian fans love him as well.

At 02:00 the Hard Rock Sofa gets the stage. The collaboration of Aleksandr Shapovalov and Denis Chepikov stared out 360 kilometers from Moscow in Smolensk, one of the oldest Russian cities. Thanks to their high ambitions they managed to sweep conventional dance music and popular pop acts off the floor. Hard Rock Sofa enchanted the international electronic music scene with their original mix of traditional Russian music and the latest electro trends. After them, at 03:30 a very popular Hungarian DJ serves the real party vibe.

Then make sure to check out all the places already opened on day zero! You can party at Robur, the Robur Bistro or at the Music FM- H&M Stage also.
